Maths
At Deeplish, our intention is to provide a high-quality mathematics curriculum which promotes confidence and enjoyment and inspires curiosity about Maths. We believe that every mathematic lesson should be a hive of activity, where hands-on exploration and peer-to-peer discussion creates excitement, builds positive attitudes and ensures that children feel safe to make mistakes. We want every child to thrive and succeed in their maths lessons, enabling them to transition between key stages and to secondary school as confident mathematicians with a secure foundation upon which to build in Key Stage 3 and 4.
We will deliver a curriculum that:
- Allows all children to acquire appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum.
- Will be increasingly demanding and broaden and deepen our pupils’ mathematical knowledge.
- Will engineer successful acquisition, consolidation and application of core mathematical knowledge for all pupils.
- Develops a deep-rooted and long-term understanding in all areas of Maths, allowing them to become adept in the three overarching aims of the National Curriculum (fluency, reasoning mathematically and solving problems).
- Adopts a concrete, pictorial, abstract approach in lessons, every child has access to a wide range of quality manipulatives, models, diagrams and representations, which supports their conceptual understanding.
- Outlines the key number facts to be learned.
- Develops mathematical vocabulary alongside key knowledge and methods.
- Acknowledges the most efficient and accurate methods of calculation that pupils will use in their next stage of mathematics education.
- Allows our pupils to calculate with speed and accuracy.
- Ensures consolidation and overlearning of content takes place at regular intervals.
- Promotes challenge and encourages children to aspire to careers in mathematics.
