Maths

At Deeplish Primary Academy we know that excellent Mathematical skills are vital for success. Maths lessons at Deeplish are designed to be engaging, fun and challenging for all pupils. We recognise that the breadth of Maths knowledge required across the curriculum is extensive and so apply cross-curricular Maths wherever possible, to make learning purposeful for our children.

Every child at Deeplish from Reception – Year 6 has a daily ‘Maths Blast’ session, which concentrate specifically on teaching core Maths skills to children and addressing any gaps in their knowledge. These sessions are delivered in a fun way and can involve things like Maths songs, competitive games, speed challenges, puzzle solving and much more.

Our Maths lessons are delivered in a way that ensures your child has their work pitched to their level of understanding and competency from day one. For each Maths unit, the children will complete a pre-learning challenge for that area of Maths, which will determine their current ability level and allow the teacher to make an informed decision about the next steps applicable for your child to advance in this area. After completing a block of learning, all children then complete a post-learning challenge, which allows the teacher (and child) to clearly see their progress to date and to know their starting points when this topic is picked up again in the future.

We have a shared calculation policy across school that clearly outlines the method of calculation used in each year group for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, to ensure that teachers can model and explain calculating consistently across school. We also apply shared policies for consistent practice in the teaching of percentages and fractions.

Above all else at Deeplish, we aim to make Maths lessons fun. Wherever possible we use real-life Maths to provide context to learning and further embed the skills being taught. Maths homework is sent home weekly across KS1 and KS2, and we ask that children are given time and encouragement to complete this to the best of their ability. We hope that our parents recognise the Maths in every-day life and will share this with their children – the distance travelled on a journey, the cost of items in a shopping trolley, the measures of ingredients when making a cake, the time it takes to complete an activity etc.
